Christiano Caldeira, MD
Dr. Christiano Caldeira is a highly respected cardiothoracic surgeon with more than 20 years of experience in high-risk cardiac surgery, heart transplantation, and advanced mechanical circulatory support. He currently serves as Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery at HCA Florida Largo and Division Director for HCA West Florida, where he leads one of the region’s most advanced cardiovascular programs. Originally from Brazil, Dr. Caldeira earned his medical degree from the Federal University of Minas Gerais and completed residency training in cardiothoracic surgery at Case Western Reserve University. He further specialized at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in heart and lung transplantation and mechanical circulatory support. With over 6,000 cardiac surgeries and more than 500 heart transplants, Dr. Caldeira is one of the most experienced surgeons in the region. His clinical expertise includes complex valve repair and replacement, high-risk on- and off-pump CABG, endovascular aortic repair, transcatheter valve procedures, ventricular assist devices (VADs), and ECMO. He also leads the division’s Cardiogenic Shock and Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) program, providing rapid, life-saving interventions for critically ill patients. In 2019, Dr. Caldeira launched the first heart transplant program in Pinellas County, now recognized for delivering superior outcomes in patients turned away by other centers due to surgical risk. Through multidisciplinary collaboration and strategic program growth, he has expanded access to advanced cardiac care for patients across Florida and beyond. Beyond the operating room, Dr. Caldeira serves on the board of LifeLink, supporting organ donation efforts, and is Vice President of a nonprofit heart failure foundation, furthering his commitment to improving patient outcomes and advancing the field of cardiovascular medicine.
