Eugene Lamb Jr Community Park

Eugene Lamb Jr Community Park

The Eugene Lamb, Jr. Park at Rich Bay is now open. Last week a host of friends, relatives and dignitaries gathered for the ribbon-cutting and official opening of the park. Commission Chairperson Sherrie Taylor said at opening of the park that it had been due to the hard work of Commissioner Eugene Lamb that the park became a reality. The park, she said, was Lamb’s dream. He wanted a park on the east side of the county. She praised the park’s steering committee for the park and stated that the committee had been before the commission on two occasions and brought several thousand dollars that had been donated to the park. Taylor said the park needed the community’s support and prayers as well. She said the park was going to combat obesity and could draw some elements that should not be there. If they do come, she said, they were going to feel uncomfortable because there had been a lot of prayer about the park. “Thank God for what has happened here today,” Taylor said about the park. “Mr. Lamb is a miracle man, nobody else could have done what he has done for this facility,” Havana Mayor Pro Tem and former coach Vernell Ross said. Former Florida State Senator Al Lawson said Lamb always had a passion about parks. Lawson said that when he was in the Senate that Lamb always called him about grant money for parks in Gadsden County. Current Senator Bill Montford, a former Godby High School principal when Lamb coached at the school, said that it was an honor to be a part of a celebration to recognize a good man. Montford said Lamb was a friend and a colleague that you could depend on. “Today is a very exciting day for us,” steering committee chairperson Elizabeth Jenkins said. “This is an opportunity that has not been afforded in this community before. We want to thank Coach for his dream.” The park became a reality when in 2007 Lamb was able to acquire the land from Coastal Plywood Company for $1 a year for a 30-year lease. The approximately five-acre lot is located at the corner of Iron Bridge Road and Lake View Road. At the time, $35,000 was allocated by the board to start infrastructure construction. Lamb’s negotiations with Coastal ended with the company giving the county use of the land for 30 years, with one exception. If the park is left in disrepair it reverts back to Coastal. Two men that Lamb has repeatedly given credit to who were important in those negotiations with Coastal are Tom Rockwood and John Higgins. Lamb thanked the county’s park and recreation department for the construction and he made a special point of thanking the Department of Corrections who supplied inmates for much of the work at the park Speaking to the crowd of about 100 at the ribbon cutting, Lamb explained that in order to keep the park the community had to help keep it clean. The park includes a playground for children, basketball goals, a paved walking trail, picnic facilities, a multi-use field and restrooms. “This is a great facility for this community,” Lamb said.
